Out of the cold, wet, uncomfortable and unforgiving vineyards this week, and into the cheery fire-lit warmth of The Marina Restaurant where, on the longest night of the year, local food and wine lovers gathered for a seven-course degustation menu matched by chef Stephane to Spade Oak wines.
From the first course of swordfish ceviche matched with Spade Oak blanc de blanc through to the last of little pastry treats called Mignardises served with a vineyard-made (and sadly not for sale) 'cognac' the evening was brilliant affair. And unlike so many of these happenings, there was ample food, with the perfectly grilled venison matched to Spade Oak 2011 Heart of Gold Syrah Viognier a meal by itself!
In typical Gisborne fashion, there was not a hint of pretension; just great fresh food, a little intro on each wine from Steve, and impeccable service from Caroline and her team in an ambient room filled with laughter and chatter. The perfect setting in which to pour Spade Oak wines with confidence and, hopefully, the first of more evenings like this to come.
